‘What You Don’t Hear’ explores the major public health problem of ear disease and hearing problems prevalent in Indigenous populations. The title ‘What you don’t hear’, speaks to the lifelong struggles of living with a hearing impairment, and the wider societal issue of poor Indigenous hearing health which the mainstream media doesn’t address adequately. For me, the ‘Constructive Journalism’ lies in empathetically portraying the seriousness of the health issue through immersive ‘showing’ rather than merely ‘telling’, which the audio format allowed. The piece shows that both systemic and social change are required to bring justice to this major problem.
