Peter Charley, deputy director of the global Al Jazeera Investigative Unit, joined the MECO Newsroom at the University of Sydney as guest speaker this semester.
Charley is a multi-award-winning journalist with more than 40 years of experience as a reporter, executive producer and producer-director. His distinguished career, which started as a cadet at the Sydney Morning Herald, included a decade as ABC Lateline executive producer, and then 7 years as executive producer at SBS Dateline. He joined Al Jazeera to head its Washington bureau in 2014 where he was producer, writer and reporter of the controversial award-winning two-part series How to Sell a Massacre. He is also the author of the bestselling book based on the investigation which led to the resignation of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation senate candidate Steve Dickson.
Charley has won numerous awards including World Gold Medal awards for Football’s Wall of Silence (2019), Islamophobia (2019), Spy Merchants (2018), and The Dark Side (2017). Among his many awards for The Poacher’s Pipeline is Winner, Foreign Press Association Media Awards, Environment Story of the Year (2017).Â
